Stem cell transplant

Stem cells are cells that are born in the bone marrow and later develop into red blood cells, white blood cells or platelets.

A stem cell transplant involves taking cells from your blood before chemotherapy and then returning stem cells afterwards.

In some cases a patient will receive their own stem cells back (this is called an autologous transplant); in others they receive cells from a donor (this is called an allogeneic transplant).
