Canteen launches appeal to ensure no teen grieves alone this Christmas

This Christmas, Canteen is calling on Australians to help raise $332,716 to ensure that no young person impacted by cancer faces the festive season alone.

For many young people, Christmas can be a painful reminder of what cancer has taken away - whether it’s a parent, sibling, or their own sense of normalcy. That’s why Canteen is launching its annual Christmas Appeal, inviting supporters to donate and help fund vital cancer support services.

Canteen is the only Australian organisation supporting all young people impacted by cancer - providing free counselling, peer support programs, and leadership opportunities for young people aged 12–25 who are dealing with their own diagnosis or that of a loved one. These services - available online or face-to-face - help to find community, develop resilience, and rediscover joy during some of life’s toughest moments.

Olivia's story

When Olivia was just 12, her mum sat her down and said the words that changed everything: “I’m not well… it’s cancer.” In an instant, Olivia’s world was turned upside down. Her mum was soon in hospital, withdrawn and unwell, and Olivia was left struggling to cope with the grief and uncertainty - especially during Christmas, a time that once brought joy and connection.

That’s when Olivia found Canteen. Through free counselling and peer support programs, she connected with other young people who truly understood what she was going through. Canteen gave her a safe space to talk, heal, and feel less alone. Over time, Olivia not only found comfort—she found purpose. She joined Canteen’s Youth Leadership program, where she developed the skills and confidence to support others and dream big for her future.

This Christmas, Olivia’s story is a powerful reminder of why your support matters. Your donation helps ensure that no young person has to face the loneliness of grief alone. Together, we can make sure teens like Olivia feel seen, supported, and hopeful -especially during the holiday season.

Your donation today can help ensure young Aussies like Olivia don't have to face the loneliness and grief alone this Christmas.
