Highlights from the 2025 National Youth Cancer Consumer Forum

Submitted by Ravi_Canteen on

In July, Canteen brought together 83 young cancer patients and survivors from across the country for the fourth annual National Youth Cancer Consumer Forum.

The Forum program, designed by young cancer patients and survivors, focused on leadership development, public speaking and advocacy coaching, and peer connection.

This year’s theme, Making Your Mark, was centred around building confidence, developing and leading youth-lead forums, enhancing advocacy and public speaking skills, and media engagement to help young cancer patients and survivors share their story in a meaningful way.

One of the highlights came from guest speaker, Hugo Toovey, founder of 25 Stay Alive. In his presentation, Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late, Hugo shared his personal cancer journey – a powerful reminder that vulnerability can be a strength. His talk left a lasting impression, with attendees describing it as inspiring, motivational, and deeply relevant.

An absolute honour and experience to hear his story which really resonated with me” – Forum attendee.

Alongside the skills-based sessions, the Forum also featured a lively African Drumming group activity and a disco-themed group dinner, giving everyone a chance to recharge, get involved and have some fun together.

Positive feedback from the young people includes:

  • 96% reported that most or almost all of their needs were met
  • 100% said they would likely attend future forums

A big takeaway was how inspirational it is to see people who have already been through what I am going through and come out the other side not only stronger but more empathetic and skilled” – Forum attendee.

With such strong engagement and enthusiasm, the National Youth Cancer Consumer Forum continues to be a key event for building skills, fostering leadership, and creating lifelong connections.
