What has been the highlight of being a Canteen Volunteer?
Back in 2016 I saw the advertisement on Seek for a research volunteer with Canteen and the following paragraph, amongst others, caught my eye:
The position requires strong computer skills, research skills, and attention to detail. We will provide on the job training in research ethics, online questionnaire development and using referencing software such as EndNote and statistics software such as SPSS.
Many position descriptions sound like an overreach but if anything, my role with Canteen has surpassed my expectations. It has been a highly fulfilling place to volunteer, and I have never regretted my decision to apply. However, putting the excellent work experience aside, the people I have engaged with over the years with Canteen have been the overwhelmingly positive highlight. All the meetings, collaborations and communications I have been party to, whether online or face to face, have left me with a sense of deep satisfaction and a realisation that the staff are second to none and an absolute joy to work with.
What does a Research Assistant Volunteer do for Canteen?
As a Research Assistant Volunteer, I provide technical support to Canteen’s clinical programs, assisting research staff in their important work. Whether it's data management, analysis, or administrative tasks, I’m always happy to contribute in any way I can.
Why have you volunteered for Canteen for close to 10 years?
My decade of volunteering with Canteen has been driven by a deep passion for supporting young people impacted by cancer. Over the years, this commitment has been shaped by four key factors:
- Personal Fulfillment: The joy and satisfaction I gain from working in an inspirational organisation keep me motivated.
- Continuous Learning: Each year brings new challenges and learning opportunities, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally.
- Building Relationships: The lasting connections I've formed with research staff have enriched my life in countless ways.
- Impact: Knowing that my contributions help improve the quality of life for young people impacted by cancer drives my dedication to the cause.
In summary, my experience as a Research Assistant Volunteer at Canteen has been profoundly meaningful for me.
