Program rules and digital code of conduct

Canteen Program Rules

  1. Be respectful - Canteen events and programs are a space where diversity is celebrated. We welcome sexually and gender diverse young people, people from all cultures, backgrounds and abilities. Racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and other forms of discrimination are not tolerated.
  2. Be inclusive - Let’s keep the space respectful. Absolutely no bullying, cliquey groups, romantic pairings or public displays of affection. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable, safe and welcome.
  3. Stay put - Please stay on site during the program. If you need to leave for any reason, just check in with the Program Staff first.
  4. Supervision - To ensure your safety, staff will supervise all program activities including free time for under 18s participants.
  5. Dorm and room privacy - If we’re heading to overnight programs, you’ll be rooming with other young people. Please stick to your own dorm, only touch what’s yours and allow others to get the sleep they need.
  6. Prohibited behaviour - Alcohol, smoking/vaping, illicit drugs, and illegal behaviour are strictly prohibited. If you break any program rules or engage in unlawful activity Canteen will review your participation and decide whether it’s appropriate for you to attend future programs. You may be asked to leave.
  7. Be sun safe - As a cancer organisation we prioritise slip, slop, slap, seek and slide. This includes protecting any exposed skin for all outdoors activities.
  8. Ask for consent - Please ensure you have consent from all others before taking photos, recording videos, sharing information or tagging online. If all parties consent, you're welcome to exchange contact details at the end of the program to stay in touch. Consent also applies when considering physical touch. Please be respectful of personal space and boundaries and always ask for consent prior to physical contact with others.
  9. Phones - We encourage you to stay engaged and limit mobile phone use unless it's part of the activity. Please don’t use phones in bathrooms and be mindful of use in dorm areas. A reminder that it is against the law to take, keep, send or ask for sexualised images of young people (including yourself) if you are under 18 years old. Canteen does not allow sharing of sexually explicit content at any program or event, regardless of age, and will follow advice from police should instances occur.
  10. Supporting each other - We understand you’re joining Canteen programs because of shared experiences. Just a reminder: this space is designed for peer support, not for giving professional or medical advice to one another. Be kind, patient, and supportive to your peers.
  11. Reach out - If something feels off, let our staff know - we’re here to keep you safe and make sure you have a great time.

Digital Code of Conduct

  1. Safety - You deserve safety and respect in all digital events. Report any offensive behaviour to Program Staff and always join from a quiet and comfortable location with the privacy you need.
  2. Your space - Our digital events are for registered attendees only. Please make sure it’s just you (and any registered siblings) joining online. If friends or others who aren’t registered join in, we may need to ask you to leave the session. This helps us keep the space safe for everyone.
  3. No recording - Screenshots and live streaming of Canteen digital events are not permitted, except by staff with prior consent from all participants.
  4. Protect your privacy - Use only your preferred name and pronouns as your username for easy identification. Your story belongs to you so only share what you feel comfortable with others knowing.
  5. We welcome everyone - We welcome sexually and gender diverse young people, people from all cultures, backgrounds and abilities. Racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and other forms of discrimination are not tolerated. You must also keep conversation appropriate. Sharing harmful content or personal details like your phone number, address, school, work, medical or family information may result in removal.
  6. What’s in view - Please be mindful of what’s visible on your screen to show respect to other attendees. Clothing must cover your chest and stomach; no offensive pictures or words on clothes or background; and no loud noise/music. Cute pets are absolutely welcome!
  7. Canteen staff monitor all sessions - If you don’t follow the code of conduct, you may be removed and will need to speak with a team member before rejoining.
