My name is Emily, I am passionate about the outdoors and exploring the natural world.
In 2006 my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and a few months after my 9th birthday the following year she passed away. I was very confused and isolated myself from my loved ones. In 2013 I joined Canteen along with my younger sister and we went on our first program. I felt instantly encouraged and supported.
Canteen is a place where the cancer journeys that we are going through, do not hinder us and restrict us from achieving our hopes, but develop us and give us the outlook to achieve much more than we had previously imagined.
A space where I can be vulnerable with my stories is so powerful. The ability to be vulnerable with others, to share who you are with others, that creates the deepest connection and empowers you. Canteen provides that space. I am forever grateful for the amazing individuals I have met.
I have participated in one-to-one counselling and different types of programs and rec days. This helped me feel more comfortable with who I am and connect with a range of individuals. It was a supportive environment where I feel connected, supported and worthy of opportunities.
