I first connected with Canteen as a teenager after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. At a time when I felt isolated and misunderstood, Canteen gave me something powerful: a community of peers who truly understood. The care I received from Canteen not only supported me through treatment but also inspired me to use my voice to improve the journey for other young people affected by cancer.
My leadership journey with Canteen began through the Queensland Youth Cancer Services Advisory Group, and in 2018, I became the first member to transition into the role of Director from Youth Cancer Services. Since then, I’ve served on all three Board subcommittees, including a five-year term as Deputy Chair. During my tenure on the Board, I have witnessed Canteen continue to evolve and respond to the unique needs of young people and their families, delivering services that truly transform lives.
Alongside my Board role, I am a doctor, Rhodes Scholar, and healthcare researcher at the University of Oxford. Canteen has been pivotal in both my personal and professional journey, allowing me to find the flip side and turn my cancer experience into an opportunity for leadership, advocacy, and empowerment.
Cancer is, without question, a life-shattering diagnosis. But with Canteen, young people like me can turn that experience into something powerful and hopeful.
