My name is Harry Barnetson. I am 22 years old, an older brother to one sister, and undertaking study in a double degree in high school education, teaching history and mathematics.
Canteen became a part of my life when my Mum discovered that she had ovarian cancer. Unfortunately this was during a time she was also pregnant with my brother Ryan, and during her cancer journey he passed. It was already a turbulent time in our lives with my family taking on the idea of another family member, but when cancer came into our family it became turbulent in a whole new reason. During this time my family were in and out of hospital as my mum undertook surgery and round after round of Chemotherapy.
It was during this period, where our family was on the rocks harder than a recent shipwreck, that Canteen helped support my family. Canteen provided my family and I chances to regain our feet with a safe place to get peer to peer support and a place to laugh in a time where it was rare to see true laughter. In my time within Canteen I was offered the opportunity to reach higher than I would have ever thought possible with leadership opportunities where I am currently the Secretary of the Western Australian Leadership Team. In this role I have realised my idea of a strong leadership is found where the leader pulls the load with the rest, and in doing so I try to bring every member into the leadership discussion, so that Canteen truly does represent the members it supports.
After years of support from Canteen my vision extends to higher leadership so that I can truly bring the whole membership into every level of Canteen and give back to an organisation that gave me so much.
